Still Working Relief Home? Here is How to Claim Tax Back on Your Heating and Electricity Bills
CORK/DUBLIN — The winter chill is here, and for thousands of hybrid and remote workers across Ireland, that means higher heating and electricity bills. But did you know Revenue will pay for part of that cost?
If you work from home for even one day a week, you are eligible for e-Working Relief. This allows you to claim back tax on a portion of your electricity, heating, and broadband bills.
With energy prices remaining high in 2026, this relief is a financial lifeline that many employees are forgetting to activate.
1. Am I Eligible?
To qualify, you must:
- Work from home on a formal agreement with your employer (part-time or full-time).
- NOT be reimbursed by your employer for these costs already.
Note: Simply checking emails in the evening does not count. It must be your dedicated work hours.
2. How Much Can I Claim?
The calculation can be tricky, but here is the simplified breakdown:
- Electricity & Heating: You can claim 30% of the cost for the days you worked from home.
- Broadband: You can claim 30% of the cost for the days you worked from home.
Example: If you worked from home for 100 days in 2025 and your electricity bill was €1,500, you could be entitled to a refund of approx. €40-€60 depending on your tax band. While it sounds small, when you add broadband and heating, it adds up quickly!
3. How to Calculate and Claim
You don’t need a math degree. Revenue.ie simplifies this.
- Gather your bills: Have your PDF bills for Light, Heat, and Internet ready.
- Log in to myAccount on Revenue.ie.
- Select “Review your Tax 2022-2025“.
- Under “Tax Credits & Reliefs”, select “Remote Working Relief”.
- Enter the total amount of your bills and the number of days you worked from home. The system does the math for you.
4. Don’t Forget the “Hidden” Items
While you can claim for light and heat, you cannot claim for:
- Rent or Mortgage interest.
- Laptops or Monitors (unless you bought them yourself and they were essential for work—this falls under Capital Allowances, which is different).
Conclusion
If you are already logging in to claim your Rent Tax Credit, take the extra 2 minutes to claim your e-Working Relief. Better in your pocket than the government’s!
